SUNKEN GARDEN

Newlyn, Penzance

This transformed space was originally an inaccessible and forgotten patch of ground, running parallel to an existing pergola pathway.

The ground, once steeply sloping, was dug down to create an enclosed seating space - the spoil used to raise up the sides, contained by new Cornish granite walls. Two gentle steps lead into and out of the area from the original pergola path.

The planting follows a sub-tropical theme, with Bananas, Cannas and Gingers providing the backbone and height to cool the space with shade in the hot summer months. Evergreen Ferns provide a lush green under story, whilst flowering hardy perennials such as Impatiens, Bergonia and Dahlias fill-in between these walls of green. An original farmyard water trough with a bespoke tap water feature (made in-house) was incorporated into the walls to further cool the space.
